To what extent did most white Americans before 1776 see themselves as British citizens, with British liberties, sharing in British cultural values and benefiting from British imperial networks?  What shared experiences, intellectual currents, and cultural elements drew together 18th century British subjects on both sides of the Atlantic?  How did these experiences, ideas, and goods serve to strengthen those bonds?
