What were the sources of disagreement among religious individuals over the “Great Awakening?” What was the appeal of enthusiastic religion to its followers? What were the consequences of the Awakening? In what ways was it a local, colony-wide, and/or international phenomenon?
In what ways did colonial development in the eighteenth century reflect Enlightenment ideas?
To what extent did most white Americans before 1776 see themselves as British citizens, with British liberties, sharing in British cultural values and benefiting from British imperial networks? What shared experiences, intellectual currents, and cultural elements drew together 18th century British subjects on both sides of the Atlantic? How did these experiences, ideas, and goods serve to strengthen those bonds?
